Our America had both the insider and outsider dynamic. David Isay was an outsider coming into a black neighborhood and trying to uncover what was happening there with the help of two black males from the hood. David Isay page 1 his goal was to spend seven days with young people living in the projects and provide them with tape recorder to tell their story. He had no idea how they would respond or if they would respond at all. Knowing he had no current experience with public housing it took courage and the belief that the story was not being view to the world. But if you think about it Lealan Jones was an insider as well even though he lived there all his life a big part of him never really fitted. He knew how to survive there but he longed to be greater and to move on passed the projects. Lealan appreciated his life, where he lived, and his family but he also dreamed page 48 as him and Lloyd sit and talk. I loved how they used sarcasm and dark humor to explain life in the hood. They had a friend name Stevie who acted as a radio talk host name David duke, page 41 he captured the emotion and the realness and the knowledge of a young person in the projects. Stevie talked about racism and how he sees it through his eyes but also through the eyes of a young black male. The book is very explicit but i love it most real i believe.
Like the book i think alot of people in my neighborhood feel like outsider just because they are born there dosen't mean they belong there or fit in. So yes i have felt like and outsider and insider at times but thats life and like the book or the two young boys you can't just give up cause life is hard.
