OuR AmErIcA
The book that im reading is called Our America. The author of this book David Isay is an outsider in a black community. Two years before writing this book he was asked to the White House to discuss drugs and gang violence in the black community. He asked everyone sitting in the room if they had ever sat down with two people from the hood and asked them how it was living in the hood. No one responded, not even the President. David Isay is trying to reach out and show America what young african americans go through. He found one person named LeAlan Jones who had a friend named Lloyd Newman. Both of them were in their early teenage years and were experiencing a lot of things. They both lived in the Ida B. Wells homes located on the south side of Chicago. The Ida B. Wells homes are the oldest public housing homes in Chicago, another name for them is called the projects or the ickies. They spent day by day recording everything going on in their lives. Each of them had tape recorders that they would talk into and tell what was going on. The time I felt like an outsider was my first time working with Columbia a few years back. I was still in high school working with college students and professers. I didn't know what it would be like. We filmed and edited a documentary on the Kaotic Drumline and we also recorded a basketball tournament on the west side of Chicago. I was kind of nervous for the first few days because that was my first time experiencing something like that, but the experience turned out to be a good one just like in the book Our America, the author and the two kids experience turned out to be a good one because now they were heard by many people.
